Arcata Community Forest: The Arcata Community Forest, located east of Highway 101 and behind Humboldt State University, is easily accessible both from the University and 14th Street.  Comprised of 793 acres, the Arcata Community Forest is a beautiful forest popular with hikers, bicyclists, horseback riding, and disc golfers.  All Horseback riders, bicyclists, and hikers should always pay attention to the trails, and stay on trails designated for their respective use.

Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary
: The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is popular for nature hikes, jogging, bicycling, and picnicking.  Bird watching is also very popular, as at any given time of the year, the Arcata Marsh offers the opportunity to view over 160 different species of birds. 

Redwood National & State Parks: The Redwood National & State Parks is a system consisting of 4 parks.  Redwood National Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, and Del Norte Coaste Redwoods State Park are accessible from Highway 101 between Orick and Crescent City.  Jedediah Smith State Park is accessible from Highway 199, which heads east of Crescent City.  These parks offer a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing, to name a few.  A few of the "can't miss" items to mark on your checklist include the Lady Bird Johnson trail and Tall Trees Grove of Redwood National Park; Fern Canyon and the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park; coastal camping in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park; and the undeveloped old-growth seen from the Boyscout Tree Trail and Howland Hill Road in Jedediah Smith State Park.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park: Humboldt Redwoods State Park, accessible from Highway 101 just south of Rio Dell/Scotia, is popular for its camping, hiking trails, and scenic drives.  Avenue of the Giants, a 31-mile long scenic drive through the park, is one of the most memorable outdoor experiences our visitors have.  Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world. Take time to picnic, camp, hike, swim, fish, raft or bike ride in the cool hush of these ancient redwood forests.  While visiting the park, don’t miss visiting Rockefeller Forest, where 10,000 acres of indescribable beauty will surely awe any visitor. There are many trails in this forest, as well as some of the tallest trees in the world.
