THE ARCATA EXCHANGEArcata Exchange first opened its doors on December 13th of 1977. Originally named Barter is Better, the store was a place of positive thinking and good vibes where people came together to exchange ideas and conduct fair commerce.
Seven years later the store got a facelift, and a new name: Barter Smarter. The name was hidden under an old plywood sign on the building, hand painted directly on to the siding. "Potato John," a local artist, volunteered to restore the letters.
After a few years as Barter Smarter, the store recieved yet another name change, becoming Old Arcata Exchange, although the "Old" portion never showed up anywhere but on business license. Although the name has changed, the idea has remained the same. A locally owned store where every customer feels welcome. We at the Arcata Exchange invite you to come in and enjoy our store and our staff, who are always friendly and willing to help.
Today, the Arcata Exchange is co-owned by Gene Joyce and original owner Keith Newcomer. Carrying on its long standing tradition of quality furniture at fair prices, Arcata Exchange specializes in solid wood construction available finished and unfinished.
